The paintings and writing presented above are highly contingent upon the insights of friends and others. It is this contingency that drives the work forward.

The name ‘flights and fissures’ is lifted from the work of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. A line of flight refers to the scene of disappearance associated with a painting’s vanishing point. A fissure is a narrow opening or crack which disrupts the wholeness of a form.

Exigencies is a collection of photographs documenting the life and death of my grandfather Ilias Argiriadis who was executed in 1952 for organizing a secret radio station for the Greek Communist Party.

The archive first appeared in the exhibition A Prism When in the Shade curated by artist Jake Davidson. The show responded directly to the State of Israel’s attack of the Gaza Strip in June of 2014 by mobilizing artists around questions of memory and political imagination. Since then pieces of Exigencies have been featured in several publications.
